Single-threaded. That’s the term my friends and family used to describe me since childhood. It meant simply not listening to more than one sound in a room with a cacophony of loud noises or completely forgetting everything else when immersed in a single activity or thought. And then moving on to the next thing, with complete attention as if I was not doing anything at all before it!
It has been an annoying (sometimes devastating) habit for everybody around me and hugely advantageous to myself and the focus of my attention at the given point of time.
After graduating from IIT Delhi in 2000, I was part of a series of startups – part of the team that started Trilogy’s operations in India, one of the 2 people to start a company called VMLogix (now part of Citrix) for Trilogy, co-founder of Stockfundas.com (now part of stockcentral.com), the person responsible for starting the developer relations team for Flexi Payments Systems at Amazon and finally starting Kuliza Technologies in 2006. I enjoy creating something new and am always willing to pay for being a part of it.
An avid student of the world’s political and economic history, my reading interests include business, economics, history or applied psychology, but rarely includes fiction as I find real life much more fascinating. My theory is that nation states are like any other organization, which is like any individual, complete with all the emotions, intelligence and tantrums, was proved by the (in)famous Wikileaks.
I love spending time with my family, especially kids, who keep me active. I sometimes play chess and badminton but rarely engage in outdoor sports. I banished television from my house in 2007 and brought it back recently on the condition that it would play select, on-demand content (e.g. YouTube) and not contribute to the further dumbification of humankind.
Benjamin Graham converted me into a value investor, but my first portfolio looked like a series of gambling bets in hindsight. I learnt from that experience that investing is much more than finding a strong balance-sheet and having loads of patience. It’s the people (behind the business), stupid!
My best investment so far has been in my own company. Like life, business is much more fun to create when you are in it with excited and talented people who share the same vision.
TIP: If you feel I am not listening to you, it is likely because of my single-threaded-ness described above. Shout at anand@kuliza.com or call me: 9901013140
